Mineral Oil - Back & Better Than Ever!

Former Oil-Haters, Rejoice: Mineral Oil is Back and Better Than Ever

If there’s one thing everyone in skin care is focusing on right now, it’s oil. The latest reports -- from The Wall Street Journal to beauty blogs -- indicate that oil, despite its formerly unfavorable reputation, is having a very big moment, but why now? What suddenly washed away the “oil-free” mindset of yesteryear? And what makes these new oils different from the old mineral oil? And, while we’re at it, what exactly is mineral oil?

Cosmetic-grade mineral oil, which is known to be one of the most effective moisturizing agents available, is derived from petrolatum, a natural ingredient made from the residue of ancient plant and animal life, which has been highly refined and purified. The hypoallergenic, non-irritating nature of mineral oil has made it a favorite among dermatologists. Contrary to what many people think about mineral oil, while it does create a nice protective barrier on the skin to help prevent moisture loss, it does not prevent the skin from “breathing”, so to speak. Oxygen reaches skin through the blood, not air. According to Dr. Zoe Draelos, in the book Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology, “I believe that cosmetic grade mineral oil is noncomedogenic [won’t clog pores] and I have never found it to be comedogenic [pore-clogging] in any of the testing I have performed for the skin care industry.”

As for the all the new-and-improved oils on the market today, what makes them different? For one, you can feel the difference. For example, Theraplex ClearLotion is a super lightweight, fast-absorbing formula. This “thinner” lubricating layer doesn’t sit and glisten on the skin’s surface like traditional baby oils and body oils. With new formulas and new understanding of how oils work on the skin, today’s oils are quickly making their way into the skin care regimens of women of all skin types, even those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. In general, oils should be used sparingly, as in just a few drops for the face, or a light spritz over the arms and legs while skin is still slightly damp.

The other fabulous thing about oils is their versatility. The appeal of a multitasking product -- one that protects and hydrates dry skin, softens cuticles, and nourishes split ends -- has a powerful impact on a woman’s approach to beauty. It’s versatile in its application, too. Try compact Theraplex ClearLotion travel spray for instant post-shower hydration. The best part - you don’t even have to use your hands.
