Dry Skin & Keratosis Pilaris
What is Keratosis Pilaris (KP)?
Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin condition resulting in the formation of rough patches and small, acne-like bumps. While KP may resemble acne, the small size of the bumps, the sandpaper-like appearance and the correlation with dry skin distinguish KP from acne. KP usually appears on the outer part of the upper arms, thighs, buttocks and cheeks.
What causes KP?
KP is a genetic disorder which leads to the excessive formation of keratin (skin cells). Dead skin cells build up around individual hair follicles and form plugs which block the opening to the hair follicle. The hair becomes trapped beneath the plug resulting in patches of rough, bumpy skin. While the cause of this excessive keratin build up is unknown, dry skin tends to worsen the condition.
How do I treat KP?
While there is no cure for KP, treatment should focus on softening the keratin deposits plugging hair follicles and removing excess, dead skin. Mositurization is also essential to helping improve KP as dry skin is a contributing factor. Theraplex FT Exfoliating Emollient, formulated with 5% Salicylic Acid, is specifically designed to soften keratin plugs and gently exfoliate dead, dry skin. Theraplex FT also provides superior moisturization and protection to moisturize dry skin and hold in essential moisture.
